A standardised clinical observation used as part of an Autism assessment
The ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition) is a standardised, face-to-face

age through adulthood, depending on their developmental and communication level.

About this Assessment

The appointment usually takes approximately 60–90 minutes.

During the session, the clinician uses structured play activities, social tasks or conversation to observe:
  • Social communication and interaction
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Shared attention and social engagement
  • Imaginative play and creativity
  • Restricted or repetitive behaviours
  • Responses to different social situations
The activities are adapted to the individual’s age, language and developmental level. For young children, the
session is play-based and designed to feel engaging and natural.

Our Process

The ADOS-2 assessment includes selection of the appropriate module, a face-to-face clinical observation,
standardised scoring, and feedback for the parent or guardian.
1. Selection of the ADOS-2 Module

The clinician selects one of five modules:

  • Module 1: Children with little or no spoken language.
  • Module 2: Children who use phrase speech but are not verbally fluent.
  • Module 3: Verbally fluent children and younger adolescents.
  • Module 4: Verbally fluent older adolescents and adults.
2. ADOS-2 Clinical Observation

At Sensory Kids, the ADOS-2 is administered and coded by Aneta Schwieterman, CORU-registered Senior
Occupational Therapist and Clinical Director
, who has completed specialist ADOS-2 administration
training through the Department of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin.

  • Parent consultation and review of relevant information
  • Selection of the appropriate ADOS-2 module

  • Clinical observation and standardised scoring
3. Report and Feedback Consultation

Appointment Duration: 90 minutes

Important Information:
The ADOS-2 is one component of a comprehensive Autism assessment. An ADOS-2 observation completed
independently does not, by itself, provide or confirm a formal diagnosis of Autism.

The findings can contribute valuable clinical information and may be shared with a psychologist,
psychiatrist, paediatrician or multidisciplinary team as part of a wider diagnostic assessment.
