The first session is typically an evaluation. This includes a mix of standardised testing, play-based observation, medical history review, and a parent discussion.
Before the appointment, you’ll be asked to fill out some paperwork. It can be helpful to note down any questions or concerns you’d like to discuss — it’s easy to forget in the moment.
At least one parent or caregiver must be present in the room with your child and the therapist. While family involvement is important, siblings should not attend this first session.
Please dress your child in comfortable clothing, so they can move freely and participate fully in the activities.
The first session lasts up to one hour, though some children may need a little extra time to settle in and feel at ease.
If you recognise several of these patterns or have concerns about your child’s development, please contact an occupational therapist for professional assessment.
You may be asked to:
While you provide background information, your child will start engaging in play and sensory activities. The therapist will observe:
The therapist will also assess fine motor skills, hand–eye coordination, reflex integration, strength, and visual–motor abilities to build a full picture of your child’s development.
You may be asked to complete some sensory questionnaires. These can seem long, but they provide valuable insights into how your child processes sensory input — helping the therapist design a plan that truly fits their needs.
If you prefer, you can fill these forms out at home before the session or during the appointment while the therapist works with your child.
Please feel free to share any information, even if it seems unrelated — every detail helps us understand your child’s needs more fully.
At the end of the session, the therapist will review the findings with you and discuss potential therapy goals.
From there, a personalised treatment plan will be created — one that gently challenges your child while supporting their individual strengths and needs.
Our goal is to help your child thrive, build confidence, and enjoy their everyday activities with greater ease.
