About this Assessment

A Housing Assessment is an Occupational Therapy assessment designed to identify how a person’s current living environment impacts their safety, independence, accessibility and everyday functioning.

The assessment may be appropriate for children or adults with physical, sensory, developmental or functional needs where the current accommodation may not adequately meet their needs.

Following the assessment, the Occupational Therapist provides professional recommendations regarding appropriate housing requirements, environmental adaptations and/or modifications that may support the individual’s functional needs and wellbeing.

Our Process

The Housing Assessment includes:
  • Review of relevant medical, developmental and functional information.
  • Discussion with the individual and/or family regarding current difficulties and housing needs.
  • Home visit and environmental assessment of the current accommodation.
  • Assessment of accessibility, mobility, safety and functional use of the home environment.
  • Identification of barriers affecting everyday activities and independence.
  • Occupational Therapy recommendations based on the individual’s assessed needs.
  • Preparation of a professional written Housing Assessment Report, where required, which may be submitted to the relevant housing authority or other appropriate service.
Each assessment is individualised and recommendations are based on the person’s functional presentation and circumstances identified at the time of assessment.
